Examining Board: Edexcel GCSE, but says he can try to accommodate any board/exam.

FUNDING for 14-16 year olds

paper star

The Department of Education has approved proposals to admit 14-16 years to study high quality vocational qualifications at Further Education College. The Colleges must have a ‘high quality’ Ofsted rating to be allowed to participate in the scheme. They will receive funding directly from the Government. 14 – 16 year olds apply direct to college….

DfE Announcement: 14-16s To Apply Directly To College From September 2013

“Following the Wolf Report, from September 2013 colleges will be able to admit 14-16 year olds and be funded directly for them by the Education Funding Agency. Local authorities will no longer be able to claim direct support grant funding for them. As a transitional measure, we will make arrangements to compensate authorities through 2013-14 for cases where they are supporting a home educated pupil in a college in academic year 2012/13 and were expecting to claim direct support grant for this in the 2013-14 financial year.”

This applies to England only

To Carthage then I came…

Not a Phoenician ship… Hussein Horack, age 10

“If anyone is looking at The Phoenicians or shipbuilding through the ages or just looking for somewhere to visit, I can recommend The Phoenecia which is moored at St Katharine’s Docks next door to Tower Bridge. They were originally due to leave on Sunday 30th September but have extended their stay to 5th October. Info at www.phoenicia.org.uk. This is a replica of a 2,600 year old ship, built only a few years ago using as many authentic methods as possible. It was a great visit and lovely to talk to the man behind the idea.” E.O.

I couldn’t resist the most enigmatic quotes I know about the Phoenicians…why does that line, “To Carthage then I came…,” resonate so?

And this passage from T.S.Eliot‘s, “The Waste Land.”

IV. DEATH BY WATER

Phlebas the Phoenician, a fortnight dead,

Forgot the cry of gulls, and the deep seas swell

And the profit and loss.

A current under sea

Picked his bones in whispers. As he rose and fell

He passed the stages of his age and youth

Entering the whirlpool.

Gentile or Jew

O you who turn the wheel and look to windward,

Consider Phlebas, who was once handsome and tall as you.
